Majority of the people in Aizawl are engaged in petty trades, cottage industries and allied sectors. Being the state capital of Mizoram, significant portion of the population are engaged in white collar middle class occupation viz. Govt. Jobs, banking, etc. MNREGS and PMGSY are implemented in rural areas of the district for the improvement of rural livelihood and development of rural roads.

Festivals like Chapchar Kut, Easter and Christmas are celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm. The socio-cultural ethos of the Mizo people is reflected in the practice of “Tlawmngaihna”, which inculcates a spirit of self-sacrifice and the will to help other people through hard times. It may also be noted that the church and civil societies like YMA, MUP, MHIP, MPF, etc. play a pivotal role in ensuring a free and fair election through their active participation.

Prominent NGO groups in Aizawl District include Young Mizo Association (YMA), MUP (Elders association), MHIP (Women’s Association), etc.
