Aizawl District at present is one of the five districts carved out by dividing the erstwhile Aizawl district in 1998. Aizawl City is not only the capital of the State Mizoram but also the District Headquarters. The Aizawl Municipal Corporation is divided into 19 Wards. The first general Election to Aizawl Municipal Corporation was held on 3rd November, 2010.
For the purpose of administrative convenience, the district is divided into 2 subdivisions, Aizawl Sadar Sub-Division and Sakawrdai Sub-Division, and 4 Rural Development Blocks,viz. Aibawk, Darlawn, Thingsulthliah and Tlangnuam.
